Six students were injured after a red pickup truck struck them at high speed near Moore high school in Oklahoma on Monday, Feb. 3, according to KOCO News 5 ABC. Authorities said that one of the students has died.

According to the news outlet, at around 3:30 p.m., the red pickup truck had hit the students near the Moore High School’s field house area, located in the 1000 block of East Main street. This area was right across from a duck pond, according to the news outlet.

As reported by the news outlet, Jeremy Lewis, the Moore police sergeant, said that one of the students hit died before the authorities arrived, and the rest of the injured students were transported to an area hospital. Lewis said that the other students were in critical condition.

Lewis described the suspect as an adult male, but no further details were given about the truck driver. Lewis said the kids were hit at a very high rate of speed according to heavy.com.

Witnesses called the police after the crash happened, and police were dispatched to the crime scene immediately. The news outlet reported that the police were able to get to the scene very quickly as the police station was nearby.

After hitting the students, the red pickup truck fled the scene, according to the news outlet. Lewis said he wasn’t sure whether the driver was a former student of the school, but as far as he knows, the driver wasn’t a current student.

“I did ask if it was a student at Moore high school, and they said, ‘no, it was not,'” Lewis said, according to the news outlet.

As the investigation goes on, Main street from Eastern Avenue to the east and several streets that run south off Main street will be closed. Lewis said Moore police are investigating and that roads will be closed well into the evening, according to the news outlet.

While they conduct their investigation, authorities are assisted by the Moore High School administrators, who helped by identifying the students involved in the incident. The school administrators also helped by contacting the parents of the students involved, according to the news outlet.

Lewis said that a few parents also arrived at the scene to assist the police officers, allowing them to work the crime scene where the crash happened, according to the interview.

Lewis said the parents would be getting their information through the school, and school administrators were available at the school gym if any parents were concerned about their children’s involvement with the crash, according to the news outlet.

The identities of the students who were struck were not revealed, according to the news outlet. The investigation is ongoing.
