Trend of Escalating Campaign Spending Shows No Signs of Stopping, But Is it Effective?

More than $16.7 billion was spent on the 2022 midterm elections at the state and federal levels combined, which is another new record. As recently as eight years ago, spending was a mere $9.4 billion.

Adam Goodman at Ballard Partners has been in the political ad business for four decades. He was also the first Edward R. Murrow senior fellow at Tufts University, so he knows the political campaign landscape well.

He’s been watching the trend of escalating campaign spending and he doesn’t see that changing any time soon. The question is, are we hitting ad oversaturation and are candidates getting the bang for their buck?
