A new ransomware attack is impacting 200 companies and potentially tens of thousands of customers across the globe. President Joe Biden says there will be consequences if Russia is behind it. Florida-based software firm Kaseya reported a ransomware attack on its systems Friday. They sent an urgent alert to customers, telling them to immediately take action to protect themselves from the attack. Cybersecurity experts think it could be the same hackers, REvil, who shut down the JBS meat company over Memorial Day, demanding an $11 million ransom. This time, U.S. companies are not alone—the same ransomware virus is being reported infecting corporate computer systems in 17 countries.
Search crews are back at the site of the Surfside building collapse in Florida—just hours after the remaining structure of that partially collapsed condo was demolished. Officials hoped the removal will make it safer for rescue teams to expand the search on the debris pile after concerns the unstable structure could endanger rescue crews working to find any survivors. Others feared the building wouldn’t hold up against powerful winds from approaching tropical storm Elsa, with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declaring a state of emergency for 15 counties—including Miami-Dade county. DeSantis says Surfside wasn’t expecting to see the worst, but the town could still see strong winds and heavy rain.
Some Facebook users are receiving alerts from the website warning them about potential exposure to extremist content. The social media giant says it’s running a test to prevent extremism on the platform. Facebook’s warning messages may trigger more fears over what some have described as the company’s attempts to stifle free speech. This comes as a group of House Republicans introduced the End Zuckerbucks Act. This bill will ban non-profits from donating to election officials. Twelve Congress members co-sponsored the bill, led by Representative Claudia Tenney.
