The world’s largest beach cleanup continues on May 27.
Volunteers have cleaned about 500,000 tons of trash off Mumbai’s Versova beach in an 85-week operation.
The 1.5 mile (2.5 km) stretch of the beach used to be among the dirtiest in Mumbai. Today, it has a whole new look.
Most of the trash is gone, but operations are ongoing. A volunteer said now it’s more about maintenance of the beach.
The cleanup effort was started by one man in October 2015: Mumbai lawyer, Afroz Shah.
Eventually, more than 200 volunteers joined in. They’ve worked tirelessly to restore the beach.
Their work has been recognized by the U.N. Many other countries have also been inspired to undertake similar drives to clean their beaches.
