The White House issued a response to the House passage of a resolution on the inquiry into impeaching President Trump—which lays out rules about who can testify and what information will be released to the public.
“The President has done nothing wrong, and the Democrats know it. Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats’ unhinged obsession with this illegitimate impeachment proceeding does not hurt President Trump; it hurts the American people,” the White House’s press secretary office said in a statement on Thursday.
The Trump administration said Democrats are now focusing on unimportant issues rather than trying to benefit their constituents.
“The Democrats are choosing every day to waste time on a sham impeachment—a blatantly partisan attempt to destroy the President,” said the press secretary.
“With today’s vote, Speaker Pelosi and the Democrats have done nothing more than enshrine unacceptable violations of due process into House rules. Speaker Pelosi, Chairman Schiff and the Democrats conducted secret, behind-closed-door meetings, blocked the Administration from participating, and have now voted to authorize a second round of hearings.”
Those hearings, the office argued, do not provide any due process.
“The Democrats want to render a verdict without giving the Administration a chance to mount a defense. That is unfair, unconstitutional, and fundamentally un-American,” according to the press secretary.
Pelosi (D-Calif.) announced the final vote, saying 232 voted in favor of the resolution and 196 voted against it. Four lawmakers, including three Republicans and one Democrat, skipped the vote. Only one Democrat voted against the resolution while no Republicans voted in favor.
As the House voted on the impeachment resolution, Trump issued a tweet.
“The Impeachment Hoax is hurting our Stock Market. The Do Nothing Democrats don’t care!” he wrote.
Before the vote was held, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (D-Calif.) questioned Pelosi’s focus on impeachment, saying that the House will now get nothing done.
“We are not working for the American people, those items would resemble the achievements of a productive Congress, a Congress that truly works for the people. But you know what this Congress counts? This Congress records more subpoenas than laws, that’s the legacy,” McCarthy said.
But Pelosi insisted that it was part of Congress’ constitutional responsibility.
“This Constitution is the blueprint for our republic—and not a monarchy. But when we have a president who says Article Two says I can do whatever I want, that is in defiance of the separation of powers. That’s not what the Constitution says,” Pelosi told other lawmakers. “So, what is at stake is our democracy. What are we fighting for? Defending our Democracy for the people,” Pelosi said.
And Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), the House Intelligence Chairman, spoke out in defense of how his investigation was proceeding.
“This resolution sets the stage for the next phase of our investigation, one in which the American people will have the opportunity to hear from witnesses firsthand. We will continue to conduct this inquiry with the seriousness of purpose that our task deserves because it is our duty and because no one is above the law,” he said.
