NEW YORK—The end of the decade is around the corner, and the iconic New Year’s Eve celebration is underway.

Despite New Year celebrations around the world, Times Square has its reputation, and the crowd is international.

“I’m not use to it because I’m from the country,” said Austin Ogle from Kentucky, penned up with dozens of others in Times Square. “It’s definitely a lot more than I expect, but I’m ready to get after it, ready for the ball to drop, I’m ready to experience it for the one time.”

Some in the crowd said that they had already been waiting there for hours by the time midday came around.

Raj Kumar from India said he had been there since early morning.

“Yeah, it’s a long day, but it’s worth it, I hope,” he continued.

The NYPD has said this year’s celebration will probably be the safest place on earth.

Officers, canines, and drones will watch for trouble while people enjoy the entertainment and each others company

“It feels wonderful, everybody’s really friendly,” said Victor Kolb from Ohio, adding that he was “making a lot of new friends.” Kolb said his New Year’s wish is for people to be friendly and smile.

Fortunately for the crowds, the temperature is expected to stay around a mild 40 degrees throughout the evening.
