A New Mexico firefighter is being called a hero after shielding a woman from the gunfire of a gun battle.

Espanola Police shared surveillance video on Facebook that shows Espanola firefighter Enrico Trujillo running into the store to shield the woman, a customer, while a gunfight plays out.

In the clip, posted online on Aug. 23, the woman and Trujillo both get up and run to the back of the store.

Officials said that the shooting stemmed from a fight outside the store, WSVN reported.

“Anyone can act brave, but only a few will act on their bravery and protect,” the Espanola Police Department said of the video. “His immediate reaction was to protect. Great job Firefighter Trujillo,” the office also stated.

Trujillo told WSVN that he didn’t think twice about trying to protect the woman.

“I didn’t have time to react or think about anything else,” he told KRQE.

He described the shooting as it unfolded. “I saw two people fighting and by then a crowd started to form outside,” Trujillo said, adding that it began to escalate quickly. “I saw a kid walking from the back of a vehicle and he loaded a gun,” he explained.

Then someone opened fire and people scattered.

“We heard gunshots go off. She ran back in the store in front of me and my first instinct was just to cover her,” Trujillo said. “I wasn’t sure if they were going to go inside the store,” he added.

Officials told KRQE that two men were arrested in connection with the shooting.

Anyone can act brave, but only a few will act on their bravery and protect.

Watch as this unidentified man takes two children in his arms and shields them with his body as shots were fired in their direction. As he went to the ground, he also positioned his body over a woman who was already laying down. Without hesitation, this man protected three lives. Thank you sir for your bravery. The video you are watching is from two different angles of security footage.
