A woman slipped off a cliff in Turkey and plunged to her death on July 6—just moments after her boyfriend had proposed to her.
Yesim Demir, 39, plummeted around 100 ft. off the cliff in Canakkale, a city in northwestern Turkey, where the couple had planned to celebrate with a sunset picnic.
Ms. Demir’s boyfriend, Nizamettin Gursu, had just proposed and was returning to their car to get the food and drinks for their picnic when he heard a blood-curdling scream, according to the NY Post.
Mr. Gursu said he ran back to the cliff, only to find that his fiancée had fallen over the edge. Ms. Demir initially survived the fall but died of her injuries shortly after, despite medics attempting to resuscitate her for 45 minutes.
“We chose it to have a romantic memory after the proposal. We drank some alcohol. Everything happened at once. She lost her balance and fell down,” Mr. Gursu said.
The authorities promptly sealed off the area and launched an investigation, with access to the cliff only permitted ‘in a controlled manner’ as of July 15.
A friend of Ms. Demir said, “This is a place where everyone comes and watches the sunset.”
“However, the roads are very bad and there is no precaution on the edge of the cliff. A fence should be drawn here, precautions should be taken.”
