Food flew everywhere when a semi-trailer truck got stuck in traffic with its trailer intruding onto some train tracks at exactly the wrong time.
The refrigerated semi-trailer was heading for a Publix supermarket in Deerfield Beach, Florida on Aug. 24, the Sun-Sentinel reported.
The truck was making a right turn across some train tracks at the intersection of Hillsboro Boulevard and North Dixie Highway around 8:30 a.m.
Traffic was backed up, and the truck couldn’t complete its turn—the back end of the trail protruded across the tracks.
‘Split Open Like an Egg’
According to witness Josh Landman, “Traffic was backed up and it couldn’t get past the [crossing] gates so the [train] hit it.”
“It split open like an egg,” he told the Sun-Sentinel.
Another witness, Jeremy White, was just coming out of a local deli when he heard a long blast form the southbound freight train’s horn.
“I was walking here from my car and you could hear the train holding the horn, leaning on it, like ‘Move!’” White said. “Then you hear crunch.”
“Like metal hitting metal, and a crunch,” Landman added. “Literally, like a hammer hitting a nail on the head.”
The train hit the trailer, spinning the trailer off the tracks after ripping it open. Crates of milk jugs scattered across the accident site.
No one on the train or in the truck was injured.
Cleared the Track, Blocked the Road
The impact cleared the truck off the train tracks, which was a benefit for rail passengers. The freight train was able to proceed to its destination by 10:30 a.m., and two Brightline higher-speed passenger trains, one coming from each direction, were able to pass the accident site without incident, though they had to slow to near-walking speed.
Other freight trains also crossed safely while crews cleaned up the debris left by the battered truck.
The truck was towed away shortly after noon, and the road was opened to traffic by 3 p.m.
