A police officer and two other people were hospitalized following a multi-vehicle car accident in Massachusetts that involved a police cruiser and two other SUVs, authorities said.

The police cruiser reportedly collided with a Jeep Cherokee and a Jeep Wrangler at about 8:45 p.m. on Tuesday. The three vehicles were piled up at the intersection of Northgate and Crowell Road in Chatham, Massachusets, briefly shutting down the road, the Chatham Police Department wrote on Facebook.

The department released several pictures of the three-vehicle crash showing the cars piled up. The Cherokee and Wrangler can be seen lying on top of the Ford Police Explorer, which had its hood severely impacted by the collision and left it crushed and dented.

A passenger in the Cherokee, as well as the driver of the Wrangler, suffered major injuries, police said. The officer who was operating the cruiser only suffered minor injuries.

Investigators said that an early report stated the three victims were transported to Cape Cod Hospital by fire officials.

Authorities said the identities of the people involved will not be released yet as family notifications are pending. The department added that it will release more details as soon as they become available.

The Cape Cod Regional Law Enforcement Council’s Crash Reconstruction Team is currently investigating the crash with the assistance of Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office, police said.
