An iconic silhouette in London’s skyline: Tower Bridge turns 125 years old this weekend.
Chris Earlie, the modern-day bridge master, calls it “a fairytale castle on the river,” and said he is “100 percent in love with it.” His wife regularly refers to the bridge as “his other wife,” he said.
A symbol of Victorian engineering, its function has expanded over the years, however its main use remains the same; it’s an essential crossing, and it still gives way to river traffic.
In Victorian times, it was all about steam, but now, the raising of the bascules (or, each half of the bridge) is powered by electricity. If you’re walking past, you might just be lucky enough to catch the moment the bridge opens, like it used to in 1894.
