A child is recovering after falling from a building and being impaled on a six-foot-long metal rod on April 8.
Toddler Nadeem, 3, had been playing with his friends on the third floor of a building in Uttar Pradesh, India, when he suddenly fell 30 feet onto a six-foot-long iron rod.
Electrician Pankaj Parma saw the freak accident and found Nadeem in a fetal position with the rod sticking through his left thigh, lower abdomen, and upper back.
Parma acted quickly to cut the protruding part of the rod and rushed Nadeem to King George Hospital, 5 miles away.
Hospital healthcare workers performed emergency surgery on Nadeem an hour after the boy arrived at 4:45 p.m.
The three-hour procedure involved cutting open Nadeem’s thigh and left abdomen before carefully removing the rod. Medical staff were relieved to discover the rod had missed all of Nadeem’s vital organs.
The rod had passed just 0.78 inches from the boy’s liver and punctured his diaphragm and small intestine.
“Initially, we did not know which internal organs had been punctured by the rod, and as such pulling out the rod would have been detrimental to his life,” doctor Samir Mishra, who was part of the medical team that saved Nadeem’s life, told The Sun.

Mishra said they had no choice but to cut open Nadeem’s thigh and left abdominal side to remove the rod.
“Only during the surgery, it was noticed that the rod had passed just 2 centimeters (0.78 inches) away from the liver, but the diaphragm was punctured and put a hole through the small intestine,” he said. “As luck would have it, the rod entered his body in an angle missing the vital organs including the heart, before exiting from his upper back.”
