A 33-year-old illegal alien was arrested on suspicion of murdering a New Jersey nanny whose body was found floating in a lake after she went on a morning jog.
Jorge Rios was arrested by homicide detectives early March 31, the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office said. Rios was charged with the murder of Carolina Cano.
Rios sexually assaulted Cano, 45, before strangling her as she struggled underwater, prosecutors said. Her body was found in the lake in Lincoln Park on March 24 around 7:30 a.m.
A law enforcement source told The Jersey Journal that Cano’s body was not in the water for long and that her neck showed visible signs of strangulation.
A nanny was last seen going for a jog before work. Her body was later found floating in a lake.

A neighbor said that Cano was from Peru and had lived in the area for about two years. Her entire family still lives in Peru.
Friends knew something was wrong when Cano, a Christian, failed to show up to church.
“She was a working woman, a good woman,” her roommate told NBC. “She didn’t bother anyone. She was a woman that was always with God, that’s how she lived. She was really a beautiful woman. She had a very beautiful heart.”
The roommate said that Cano left at 5:30 a.m. to go out on a jog.
5 days after Caroline Cano was found in Lincoln Park lake, residents march in solidarity as cops search for a killer. Sources say surveillance video shows she entered Jersey City park alone Sunday before 6am, then into a dark open field. She wasn’t wearing usual jogging clothes. pic.twitter.com/2NQrcyjIp8

“It has affected us so much because it happened so suddenly,” the roommate said. “It didn’t happen because she was sick, it happened from one moment to the next.”
Sharon Guarini, who lives in the same building, said that deaths are part of life in the city.
“It’s city life,” Guarini told The Jersey Journal. “You can’t control city life. You have to be aware of your surroundings and what’s going on around you.”
I’m furious. I’m furious that this happened to a woman in my neighborhood. If anyone in #JerseyCity knows Caroline Cano & knows if the family has any needs, please get in touch – I know a lot of pissed off parents desperate to do something positive.

She said the neighborhood was improving but still had problems. Another neighbor, Robert Patterson, said that the neighborhood had been good for a while but “the troubles are coming back.”
Surveillance footage obtained by investigators shows Cano entering the park between 5:45 a.m. and 5:50 a.m. The video shows her crossing the park before walking into a dark area of an open field, reported WABC. She was never seen again.
Police didn’t say officially if Rios was captured on surveillance footage but a source told The Jersey Journal that he was spotted on video around the time Cano’s body was found.

Sources told The Journal that Rios is in the United States illegally and that he was arrested at a Jersey City restaurant.
Mayor Steven Fulop said on April 1 that police believe Cano and Rios did not know each other, according to WABC.
“Our understanding is that it was strangers. He frequented the park and we feel comfortable we have the right person based on his statement,” Fulop said.
