STAMFORD, Connecticut—Shen Yun finished its performances in Stamford on Dec 27. Audience members were awestruck by the performance.

“I loved it,” said Wiley Bell, partner of LEK consulting firm. “I was expecting to enjoy it and it exceeded my expectations. It’s fantastic.”

“One of the best I’ve ever seen,” he added. “The music combined with the dancing, I’ve never seen anything in perfect harmony like that before.”

Shen Yun uses performing arts to present stories that bring to life the inner essence of China’s divinely inspired culture, including its many legends and tales.

“It’s been extraordinary the costumes are brilliant and beautiful with all the movement,” said Christina Balotesceu, founder and CEO of 360Alumini. “The dancing is absolutely incredible. It’s a combination of magnificent art and culture and education.”

“I feel like I’ve learned a lot about Chinese culture and history in a short amount of time,” she added.  “And I’ve really been happy to bring my children to share in it too … broadening our world and our horizons, thanks to this show today.”

Chinese culture was influenced by Taoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism, and traditional Chinese culture emphasized virtue and self-discipline in daily life.

“I love the Buddhism orientation and the meditation element and a different way of thinking than traditional Western religions,” Balotesceu said. “I just like having exposure to this for myself and my family to broaden our minds.”

The stories presented on stage, however, are not limited to those from the past.

According to its website, Shen Yun also portrays events occurring in modern-day China relating to the persecution of Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa.

Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa is a traditional spiritual practice of meditation, exercises, and moral self-improvement that was introduced in China. Its core principles are truthfulness, compassion, and forbearance.

Falun Gong is rooted in traditional Chinese beliefs and values, and it quickly attracted millions of practitioners in China.

In 1999, Jiang Zemin, the head of the communist regime at the time, set out to eliminate Falun Gong, along with traditional Chinese culture. The persecution continues today.

“I’m happy I saw that part of it,” said Bell, referring to the persecution piece. “I was very happy and very sad about China. Not letting 100 million people or however many there are that practice this faith, to be persecuted is bad.”

Bell said he wishes that audiences in China will be able to see Shen Yun perform one day.
