Russian Professor: Russia Rapidly Returning to Soviet-Style Rule

Obviously, for anyone in Ukraine, February 24 marked a cataclysmic shift away from normal life. Over 3.6 million people are now refugees, and according to the International Organization for Migration, another 6.5 million are displaced inside their own country.

But a big untold story of this war is how quickly, and fundamentally, life has changed for everyday Russians too. It’s not an easy perspective to get, fortunately we have with us Professor Konstantin Sonin from the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy.

Sonin was living in Moscow when the Kremlin launched its invasion and quickly decided it was too dangerous for him to stay in Russia. He has been following political and economic developments there very closely and says the situation is looking more and more like a return to Soviet times.
