Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas) won reelection to the U.S. House in Texas’s 2nd Congressional District, according to the Associated Press.
In a Nov. 3 statement on Twitter, Crenshaw thanked voters in Texas, saying it had “been an honor to represent you and an honor to continue representing you.”
Crenshaw fought for his seat in a race against Democrat Sima Ladjevardian, a lawyer who had served as a senior advisor and finance chair to Beto O’Rourke during his 2018 senate race and subsequent 2020 presidential run.
Considered a rising star in the Republican party, Crenshaw had not previously served in elected office before running in 2018. He retired as lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy in 2016 and had served ten years in the Navy SEAL teams, according to his campaign biography.
During his third deployment in 2012, Crenshaw was hit by an IED blast during a mission in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He later woke from a coma to find out his right eye had been destroyed in the blast and his left eye was badly damaged. Doctors believed he would never be able to see again, but after multiple surgeries, he later regained sight in his left eye.
In her conceding election night remarks, Ladjevardian congratulated the congressman on winning the election and said running as the Democratic nominee in Texas had been the honor of her life.
“Tonight however we came up short,” she said in a Facebook stream. “Cleary Dan and I disagree for the path forward, but I do hope he will succeed and really represent the community.”
