Prince Philip, husband of Queen Elizabeth, turned 96 today. His birthday was marked by a 41 gun salute in London.

The prince will likely spend his birthday privately at Windsor Castle.

Buckingham Palace announced in May that Prince Philip will retire soon. He will permanently stand down from royal duties in the fall.

Next weekend, the queen will celebrate her  91st birthday at the annual Trooping of the Color parade. Prince Philip will be at the festivities.

After retirement, it is believed he may still appear at public events, but he will not play an active role.
