Over the weekend, elementary school teacher Li Tiantian from Hunan Province sent out an SOS message to her friends. In it, she described how local police threatened and forced her into a mental hospital despite her current pregnancy—all because she posted on Chinese social media site Weibo showing support for a college teacher in Shanghai, named Song Gengyi.

Song questioned whether the official death toll of the Nanjing Massacre, as recognized by the Chinese Communist Party, lacked historical support. She suggested that given that it’s highly contentious subject in Chinese and Japanese historiography, the identity of the victims should be verified and recorded in a more serious manner.

The Nanjing Massacre happened during the Sino-Japanese war in 1937.
