‘Please Don’t Drag Us in Front of Congress Again’: Professor on What’s Behind Meta Limiting ‘Political Content’

Meta has announced that it will limit “political content” for users on Threads, Facebook, and Instagram from accounts that are not already followed. NTD spoke to Andrew Selepak, a social media professor at the University of Florida, who says Meta is doing this to avoid scrutiny. Moreover, the timing of the move has been called into question, given that a presidential election is on the horizon.

Mr. Selepak said Meta’s decision is likely designed to avoid its being accused of spreading misinformation or fake news. “They’re really just trying to do these public displays of ‘Hey, we’re working on something, we’re doing something—please don’t drag us in front of Congress again and make us have to apologize for the way we are impacting politics and we’re impacting the American population,'” he said.
