U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi met with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen and held a joint press conference in Taipei, Taiwan, on Wednesday.

Pelosi received the Order of Propitious Clouds with Special Grand Cordon, Taiwan’s highest civilian honor, from Tsai at the meeting at the president’s office.

Pelosi arrived in Taiwan on Aug. 2, in spite of continued threats of violence from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and its propaganda organs.

She issued a public statement upon arrival in Taiwan, celebrating Taiwan and the United States’ shared commitment to democratic values in the face of adversity.

Pelosi also reaffirmed that the United States was in no way changing its long-standing policy on China–Taiwan relations, and would continue to abide by the status quo.

The visit comes amid a multi-national tour of Southeast Asia that will also see the speaker visit Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, and Japan.
