A prosecutor in Ohio has decided not to pursue charges against a mother who shot her daughter in the arm accidentally, reported Fox News.
According to WKBN27, on Aug. 30, at 9 p.m., 18-year-old Hannah Jones, of Ohio, decided to pay her mom a surprise visit when she returned home from college—with her boyfriend—unannounced.
After finding the living room empty, Jones decided to proceed to her mother’s bedroom. The mother—not expecting anyone—took her daughter to be an intruder, WFMJ reported.
Police said the mother, without hesitation, fired one round from her .38 Special at the alleged intruder. She then realized the person she had shot was her own daughter.
The boyfriend, who had accompanied Jones into her mother’s home, says he heard one shot, followed by screams from his girlfriend. He then rushed into the bedroom and called 911.
The following is a transcript of the 911 call:
CALLER:
“My girlfriend just came home from college, and her mom didn’t know, like honestly—she accidentally shot her and we don’t know what to do.”
DISPATCHER:
“She accidentally shot her?”
CALLER:
“Yes, I believe in the arm.”
DISPATCHER:
“Okay, and how bad is she bleeding?”
CALLER:
“It’s pretty bad.”
When authorities arrived at the home, they found Jones walking down the driveway, “covered in blood,” with a towel wrapped around the upper part of her right arm.
Jones was then rushed to the hospital for treatment.
According to NY Post, Jones says she “ran through the door with excitement” hoping to surprise her mom.
In a Facebook post, Jones wrote, “As I ran through the door, she was in fear for her life and shot me.”
“I crouched down and let out two screams,” she added.
Following the incident, Girard Police Chief John Norman told reporters, “We will collect all the facts, and we will present it to a Prosecutor, not to be malicious.
“But we have to present the facts like we would in any other case. At that point, the Prosecutor will make a decision whether we will go ahead and charge or not charge in this case,” he said.
After reviewing the case, an Ohio prosecutor announced that charges would not be filed against the mother.
Jones said that her right elbow was broken in three places from the gunshot, requiring eight screws and three plates during surgery.
“It truly has been a crazy few days, but I am beyond thankful to still be here on this earth today,” Jones wrote.
“I sure am lucky to still be here! It still baffles my mind to know that I could be dead, but thankfully I had an angel looking over me that night.”
