Moscow thunderstorm kills one, closes airport

A powerful thunderstorm that weather watchers are calling the biggest in decades, hit Moscow on June 30.

Lightning killed one man and hit two airplanes as they landed. Some 40 flights had to be diverted.

A fallen tree temporarily stopped Moscow’s railroad and falling trees elsewhere injured several people.

More than 4,000 people lost power.

A similar storm tore through Moscow on May 29 and killed 16 people.

This one was not as destructive; for people who avoided the high winds and lightning, it was just a big rainstorm.

One couple who hid from the storm said they were suddenly hit by “very heavy rain.”

“We were walking from the Old Arbat area and then just ran here—anywhere—to hide from the rain in a cafe or something,” said the gentleman, holding an umbrella over his friend.

“We aren’t wet yet, but if we keep standing [here], we will definitely get soaked.”
