Members of UFT Rally to Support Councilman Peter Koo for Re-election

QUEENS, NY – Members of United Federation of Teachers hosted a rally today in front of J.H.S.189 in Flushing to support Councilman Peter Koo(D-20th District) for re-election.

Dermot Smyth, Political Action Coordinator of UFT, said, “The UFT supports candidates who support our public schools, their students, and their families. That is why we are endorsing Council Member Peter Koo, a fighter for education, for re-election to the Council.”

Councilman Peter Koo said, “Education is extremely important to me. I believe that consistent investment in our public school system and cultural institutions, such as libraries, and organizations like Flushing Town Hall and Queens Botanical Garden, which enhance education.

During the past eight years in office, I successfully secured over $21 million in capital improvements for the schools in my district. I was also able to successfully advocate for a new annex for Francis Lewis HS so that they can remove the transportable classroom units (TCUs), and add a new wing to PS24Q to accommodate the growing student population. I secured an additional $12.8 million for our local libraries and cultural institutions.

I also have a strong relationship with my local schools and have worked closely with them to address various issues such as the need for additional safety measures around schools. I am proud to work with distinguished teachers and principals in our district. And I am looking forward for four more years to make our education system better and better. So our children and their children will be able to enjoy the same opportunity we have and become successful.”
