Martial Arts Instructor: ‘It’s Poetry in Motion’

Chris Kent, a martial art instructor at Christ Kent Jeet Kune Do, attended a Shen Yun performance in Boise, Idaho at Morrison Center for the Performing Arts on March 27.

“It’s absolutely amazing. It’s poetry in motion,” he said.

To Kent, watching the performance is a rediscovery of traditional culture.

“I feel blessed, I feel honored. It’s something that, these things are so important. They should not be allowed to die or to fade away. It’s important for our young people to know even again about the Chinese culture, and their dance.”

Kent is recognized internationally for his knowledge in Jeet Kune Do, a martial art form developed by Bruce Lee. He currently teaches it at his own school.

“One thing I didn’t realize is that all of the gymnastic moves, you know that one sees even in kung fu, comes from the dance. And I just, again their idea of goodness and beauty and, and things like that. That’s what I find.”

He was impressed by the divine beauty in the performance, as the name Shen Yun implies.

“I saw it come through very much and but it’s not an enforced divinity, it’s just divinity as it should be. I really like that, I really appreciate it. I believe that we are spiritual beings inside a human body and I felt that really brought it out a lot,” he said.

“That experience becomes part of me now. And I will take that when I leave and it will allow me to view things even in a different light even with regards to Chinese culture.”

He was happy to see Shen Yun in Boise.

“It is a stunning, outstanding, amazing, cultural experience that will impact people for a lifetime. Thank you for sharing this and thank you to Shen Yun for bringing this out to the people.
