Authorities in New York have arrested a suspect linked to the fatal shooting of Matthew Webb, a McDonald’s employee who was shot in the neck on Monday and succumbed to his injuries several days later.
On Wednesday, Keechant Sewell, commissioner of the New York Police Department (NYPD) confirmed that 20-year-old Michael Morgan was arrested and charged with attempted murder and criminal possession of a weapon for the alleged shooting of Webb.
Morgan is expected to face upgraded homicide charges, prosecutors told a court hearing on Thursday, even before Webb’s death was confirmed.
The 23-year-old McDonald’s worker was shot around 7 p.m. on Aug. 1 outside the restaurant on Fulton Street in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn.
A woman in her 40s, who is reported as Morgan’s mother, confronted Webb and started complaining that “her fries were cold,” a high-ranking police source told the New York Post.
“The mom was on FaceTime with her son, and he heard the dispute between her and the clerk,” the official explained. “The son and the clerk got into a dispute inside, and it went outside.”
As the conflict escalated, Webb and Morgan both exited the fast-food chain. Once outside, Morgan allegedly pulled out a gun and shot the worker in the neck, police said.
Morgan then fled the crime scene before he was arrested the next day. He has a number of prior arrests, including for grand larceny, assault, and theft of service.
An eyewitness told the Post that Webb’s co-workers stood around him, crying, as medical services rushed to the scene.
“A man took off his shirt and put it on the neck to try to stop the bleeding. [The victim’s] right eye was swollen shut,” the witness explained.
“He couldn’t talk,’” the witness added. “He was just shaking. His chest was heaving. He was still breathing when they put him on the stretcher.”
One of Webb’s co-workers described him as a “good guy,” adding that the restaurant decided to cut its security personnel just over one month ago.
A local store owner told the Post that Morgan’s mother cooperated with the NYPD and that she admitted to investigators of calling her son during the verbal altercation with Webb.
Police also allege that Morgan is connected to a second homicide after he confessed to killing Kevin Holloman in October 2021 during questioning about the McDonald’s shooting, the Post reported.
