French President Emmanuel Macron has stirred controversy with French opposition leaders by saying he wants to annoy unvaccinated French people during an interview with Le Parisian newspaper, on Jan. 4. The interview was published shortly before French lawmakers were to resume a debate, which started on Jan. 3 over a new vaccination law, in Paris. The new law would effectively ban unvaccinated people from much of public life.

Macron also called unvaccinated people “irresponsible” and said he wants to make their lives difficult. Opposition lawmakers have demanded explanations from Macron over these comments.
