‘Lying Flat’: Chinese Youth Spurn Corporate Jobs for ‘Me Time’

Faced with diminishing job prospects as the economy slows, Chu Yi is one of many young Chinese choosing to “lie flat,” a term used to describe people who work just enough to get by and can afford to spend their time on what they enjoy.

Ms. Yi used to have a corporate job in fashion but she quit after two years to become a tattoo artist because she hated her boss and often had to work overtime.

Yun Zhou, a Sociology assistant professor at the University of Michigan, weighs in on the profound challenge for young people in China as the economy slows and labor market prospects remain bleak.
