A woman died on Tuesday after falling through an icy pond in Colorado, according to multiple reports.
Fox News reported that Leslie Webster, 53, fell through the pond on the campus of Colorado Academy in South Pierce. She was with her husband and pet dog at the time, according to a news release issued by West Metro Fire Rescue.
The fire rescue stated that they received a call at around 12:30 p.m. on Feb. 9 from Webster’s husband telling the officials that his wife had fallen into the pond. The rescue dispatched officers to the location, and within two minutes of arrival, they managed to drag both Leslie Webster’s body as well as that of her dog’s from the freezing pond.
Following the rescue, Webster was immediately transported to a local hospital, and the dog was taken to a veterinarian, as both had sustained critical injuries.
Webster died from complications of cardiopulmonary arrest and severe hypothermia on Tuesday, according to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office in a statement.
Webster’s family thanked everyone who offered their condolences and support to the family, according to Fox31 Denver.
“She fought an amazing and courageous fight over the last several days. Even in the midst of physical pain and struggle, her light and her spirit remain with us. Our grief is beyond measure, but we are so grateful for your outpouring support,” the family said.
In a post on the Colorado Academy Facebook, the family wrote: “Our family appreciates the outpouring of love and support that has been shown to us during this time. We love the many cards, hand drawn pictures, and letters made by the children for Leslie. Keep the love coming.”
Webster was a kindergarten teacher since 2009 at Colorado Academy, an independent preparatory day school, according to Fox News.
Mike David, the head of the academy, offered his condolences and recalled that Webster said that teaching at there was her dream job.
“We will remember her for her unfailing dedication to students, her incessant smile, and bright outlook. In my mind, I can see her laughing and her head tossed back. She will be dearly missed at [Colorado Academy]—by students, faculty, staff, parents and alumni,” David said.
Webster’s dog also died, according to Fox News.
