Kavanagh Endorsed for New York State Senate by Downtown Progressive Democrats Club

New York – Downtown Progressive Democrats (DPD) announced that the club’s membership has voted to endorse Assemblymember Brian Kavanagh’s campaign for State Senate. Kavanagh is running to represent the Senate District recently vacated by Daniel Squadron, which spans parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn.

The endorsement by DPD, an important Democratic political club in Lower Manhattan, is the latest jolt of momentum for Kavanagh’s campaign, which has already been endorsed by  Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, State Senator Brad Hoylman, Assemblymember Deborah Glick, and the Working Families Party.

John Scott, a leader of DPD, said, “Downtown Progressive Democrats voted to endorse Brian Kavanagh because we need a reliable progressive Democrat fighting for our community in the State Senate. Brian has already demonstrated leadership on issues of great concern to us, including his efforts to make sure that housing stays affordable for people in our community. We’re going to do everything in our power, in our party nomination process, and in November, to help Brian win.”

Assemblymember Kavanagh expressed his appreciation for DPD’s support. “I’m honored to have the endorsement of Downtown Progressive Democrats, whose members have a long and distinguished record of engaging local Democrats and backing progressive candidates for public office. With the support of Downtown Progressive Democrats, I look forward to continuing my work protecting affordable housing, ensuring our neighborhoods are resilient, funding the MTA, and reducing gun violence,” said Kavanagh.

Kavanagh currently represents the 74th Assembly District and is running for State Senate to represent the 26th Senate District, which includes lower Manhattan and parts of Brooklyn. Kavanagh is one of New York’s leading champions of reform and is an outspoken advocate for changing the culture in Albany. As an Assemblymember, Kavanagh authored some of the most important bills to strengthen rent laws and expand tax breaks to freeze rents and keep housing affordable for seniors and people with disabilities. He helped lead the successful effort to ban the environmentally destructive practice of drilling for gas known as “fracking,” and is a leader in the fight against gun violence. Kavanagh is currently the Chair of the Assembly Committee on Consumer Affairs and Protection. His complete biography can be found here or at briankavanagh.org.

The 26th State Senate district includes the Manhattan neighborhoods of Battery Park City, Chinatown, the East and South Villages, the Financial District, Little Italy, the Lower East Side, SoHo, and Tribeca and the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Brooklyn Heights, Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, the Columbia Waterfront, DUMBO, Downtown Brooklyn, Fulton Ferry, Greenpoint, the Navy Yard, Vinegar Hill, and Williamsburg.
