India’s largest beach cleanup started with one man’s hands

India’s largest beach cleanup drive, became the world’s largest beach cleanup.

It started with a lawyer in his early 30s who used just his hands to pick up trash. He didn’t contact any government agencies.

Soon, others saw him. His actions even caught the attention of the UNEP (United Nations Environment Program). The drive managed to clean away 500,000 tons of garbage from Mumbai’s dirtiest beach.

Versova Beach is usable again. Residents can now enjoy the coastline. Indonesia, Southeast Asia, and Africa have similar drives all inspired by this one.
