An illegal alien living in North Carolina has been accused of murdering a 19-year-old woman just six months after being released from jail in a sanctuary county.

Jose Bryan Guzman, an El Salvador national, allegedly strangled his girlfriend to death in August after he was released from a Durham County jail. Guzman, 18, and Marlene Yamileth Portillo-Posada were reportedly dating at the time of her death, reported Breitbart. Guzman told an associate he killed his victim because he thought she was cheating on him, reported News Observer, citing a warrant.

Guzman was arrested in December 2018 for committing armed robbery on two separate occasions, Breitbart reported. Less than a month later, the county announced it would no longer cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials. ICE officials placed a detainer on Guzman but in March, Durham County officials released him into the community.

Breitbart reported, citing a law enforcement source, that Guzman is in the country illegally and arrived around September 2015 as an unaccompanied minor. U.S. authorities then gave him a notice to appear in court for immigration proceedings and he was released into the interior of the country, popping up on the radar only after his 2018 arrests.

Portillo-Posada’s body was found near Jordan Lake in the woods on the 6400 block of North California, reported News Observer.

Police were alerted to the crime after someone came forward and said Guzman had told that person he had killed his girlfriend because she was cheating on him. The person also told police that Guzman asked the person for help carrying the body out of his apartment. The person said they observed Portillo-Posada’s body in his apartment. The person added to authorities that Guzman had sent Facebook messages stating he had killed the 19-year-old, according to a warrant.
