Critical race theory (CRT) has emerged as a deciding factor motivating voters. It was a key issue that helped Republican Glenn Youngkin win the race for Virginia governor—a state that Joe Biden won by 10 points in 2020. By election day, a Fox News poll reported that 72 percent of voters said the debate over critical race theory in schools was the “single most important factor” or an “important factor” in their voting decision.
What played out at state level, bubbled up from the counties, where school board meetings have grown increasingly contentious over this issue. In those elections too, many candidates ran on an anti-CRT platform and won victories across the country, from Colorado to Kansas, Ohio to New Jersey.
