Hong Kong’s Situation Explained

For more than 150 years, Hong Kong was a British colony. But in 1997, control of the territory was handed back to China.

At the time, communist Beijing promised “one country, two systems” for capitalist Hong Kong—meaning self-governance, individual freedoms, and judicial independence, at least until 20 47.

But Chinese regime has been chipping away at those promises.
