Flushing, NY – Council Member Peter Koo and the Lower East Side Ecology Center today announced an upcoming e-waste recycling event at the Queens Botanical Garden on Sunday, January 28th. The collected materials will be either reused or recycled in a local, safe, and sustainable manner.

Residents and small businesses will be able to drop off their unwanted electronics from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Over the last two years, the partnership between CM Koo, the Lower East Side Ecology Center and Queens Botanical Garden has yielded 36,394 pounds of electronics from over 250 NYC households.

City Council Member Peter Koo stated, “Electronic waste poses a danger to our environment due to the large amount of heavy metals contained in them. Recycling these materials eases the burdens on our landfills, creates jobs and conserves natural resources. A sustainable community takes a conscious effort from all of us, and I’d like to thank the Lower East Side Ecology Center and the Queens Botanical Garden for helping to make our community a cleaner place to live, work and visit.”

Ellen Luo, Director of Development, at Lower East Side Ecology Center, stated, “The Ecology Center has been implementing e-waste recycling, reuse and repurpose for the last 15 years. In addition to collection events in neighborhoods throughout the city in partnership with community-based organizations and government representatives, the Ecology Center has a warehouse for e-waste drop-offs all year round. In 2017, the Ecology Center collected 1,008,503 pounds of electronic waste with 74 collection events across the city and drop-offs at our warehouse.”

Queens Botanical Garden Executive Director Susan Lacerte, stated, “QBG is once again pleased to host an E-waste event. We are into recycling big time here, from recycling banana and apple peels into compost for your garden and houseplants to helping all of us responsibly deal with the electronic devices which have become part of daily life. QBG’s website is full of information on what you may bring, how much and other helpful information. In addition, we have a Craft Table for Kids (of all ages!) from 2 to 4 pm that same day. We applaud Lower East Side Ecology Center, our partner for this event, for their long-time leadership and action on this issue and we thank our wonderful Councilman Peter Koo for publicizing this event and his devotion to Queens and its people.”
