Several people have been injured after a gunman opened fired in a tram in the Dutch city of Utrecht, according to authorities.

Police have provided no further details with no information on how badly injured the victims were, but some media outlets reported that one person had been killed in the incident.

Police said in a statement that they are taking into the account the possibility that a “terrorist motive” was behind the incident, which occurred at around 10:45 local time.

“Several shots were fired in a tram and several people were injured. Helicopters are at the scene and no arrests have been made,” said police spokesman Joost Lanshage, according to Reuters.

According to Dutch news agency ANP, one person was killed in the incident, with a reporter quoted as saying that a body had been covered in a sheet and was lying on the tracks between two tram carriages.

According to local reports, the square nearby the tram station has been cordoned off by authorities, and emergency services are at the scene.

The BBC reports that the gunman is still at large, and that no arrests have been made.

The Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte called the situation “very worrying.” The national head of counterterrorism said that crisis team was meeting about the incident.

According to the Associated Press, police have erected a white tent in the location where what appeared to be a body under a blanket had been seen.

Witnesses say they heard multiple shots. “A man started shooting wildly,” a witness told Dutch news site NU.nl.

Information is still emerging on the incident.
