Authorities have recovered the bodies of five deceased children in an apartment located in Solingen, a town in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, German media reported, citing police.
The children’s grandmother reportedly notified police to tell them her 27-year-old daughter had allegedly killed five of her children and was on her way to commit suicide by jumping in front of a train, German outlet Bild reported.
She jumped in front of the train in the early afternoon in Düsseldorf—a city in western Germany—but survived the suicide attempt with serious injuries. She was transported to a hospital and is currently under police surveillance.
The children were aged between one and eight, the only surviving child is an 11-year-old boy, who was staying with the grandmother at the time of the incident.
Police haven’t disclosed a cause of death for the deceased children yet. A motive for the incident also hasn’t been released as “the mother has yet to be questioned,” German police told Bild.
An investigation into the family drama has been launched, with police in a neighboring town helping with investigating the deaths.
