A family from Texas realized a graduation-themed cake they bought from Walmart was made out of styrofoam, after cutting into it at the graduation party, according to multiple reports.

Nellie Flores told ABC13 Eyewitness News that she, along with her sister, Marsy Flores, had ordered a two-tiered cake from Walmart in preparation for Marsy’s graduation party. According to the news outlet, when the two went to pick up the cake on May 30, they were surprised to learn that the cake they had ordered hadn’t even been made yet.

The Walmart store manager then told the sisters to select a pre-made cake. The sisters chose a cake, placed a photo on top of it, and brought it to the graduation party.

When it was time to cut the cake, however, they learned that it was not made of sugar or icing at all, but entirely out of styrofoam—as it was a display cake.

“You heard the styrofoam squeaking and we were like—what?” one witness said, according to ABC13.

Another witness told ABC13 that everyone at the the party all “sunk in their seats” when they realized that it was made of styrofoam.

“I don’t expect for them to make up for it because they can’t,” another woman said. “They just can’t make up for it.”

According to the news outlet, the family was upset by the ordeal and returned the cake to Walmart. The store responded to the mishap by giving the family a $60 gift card for the value of the cake. They also gave the family an additional gift card, as well as a free cake.

Eyewitness News reached out to Walmart for a comment and the store responded with the following statement:

“This was the result of a misunderstanding. We attempted to make things right with the customers by way of a gift card.”

Badly Decorated Cake

A couple ordered a $35 cake from an Australian supermarket for their son’s birthday and had requested that the cake be decorated with a frog theme. But when they received the cake from the supermarket, Woolworths, it was anything but what they asked for, according to a previous report.

Instead of a frog themed cake, the decorator drew a happy face and the number three with icing on a green cake.

The couple then called Woolworths to see if they could get the cake redecorated, but they were told that the supermarket didn’t decorate cakes. Fortunately, the couple was able to find another cake decorator who was able to salvage the barely-decorated cake, according to FoxNews.

The birthday party still went off without any problems, but according to the news outlet, the family was still upset and said that it seemed like the store didn’t even bother to put in an effort.

“I was most disappointed with just the lack of effort. It seemed like they didn’t even care,” Shane Hallford said. “It was a disgrace. I will never be buying cakes from Woolworths again.”

Woolworths was reported to have reached out to the couple and gave them a $50 gift card for the ordeal as an apology.
