Drunk Driver Kills 1, Injures 3 After Crashing Into Construction Zone

A drunk driver crashed into a construction site and killed one construction worker and injured three others on the morning of Oct. 19, according to multiple reports.

Danyel McKenzie Middleton, the female driver of the 2013 Dodge Dart, was traveling eastbound on Concord Mills Boulevard. She drove into an area where a road improvement project was under construction, according to a media release issued by the Concord Police Department. Although the area was well marked and there were adequate signs to alert drivers of construction work, the woman drove through the area. She struck four construction workers on-site at the time, killing one. All workers were employed at the Crows Brothers Concrete, according to Fox News 46.

“As a result of the investigation, the Concord Police Department’s Public Safety Unit and Motor Unit Investigators concluded that Danyel Middleton was appreciably impaired by alcoholic beverages and her blood alcohol levels were above the legal limit,” according to the media release.

Investigations are currently underway as authorities gather and review more evidence regarding the crash. As such, more charges might result from after the conclusion of the investigation, according to the media release.

As a result of the incident, Middleton was charged with Felony Death by Motor Vehicle. Currently, Middleton is being held at the Cabarrus County Jail on a $1 million bond, according to the media release.

“Overnight, the Concord Police Department Public Safety Unit investigated an incident on Concord Mills Blvd. where four road construction workers were struck by a vehicle while working within a marked construction zone. One of the crewmen working within the zone was pronounced deceased at the scene. The others have been transported to area hospitals for treatment,” according to the City of Concord Police Department Facebook Post.

Concord police responded to reports of a vehicle crash. At the scene, authorities were able to identify the deceased as Socorro Maya Martinez, of North Carolina, and pronounced him dead at the scene. The other three were Victor Ortiz Ceyon, Marco Antonio Cruz, and Victorio Martinez Cruz, all of whom are from Graham, North Carolina, according to the media release.

The three injured were transported to local trauma centers to receive treatment, according to the media release. Victor Ortiz Ceyon and Marco Antonio Cruz are currently still undergoing treatment at the hospital, in severe and critical condition, respectively. Victorio Martinez Cruz has been treated and released from the hospital, according to Fox News 46.

According to Fox News 46, Middleton is due in Cabarrus County Courthouse on Oct. 21, where she made her first appearance.

“The Concord Police Department extends our sincere thoughts and prayers to the victims and families tragically impacted by this incident, and to employees of Cruz Brothers Concrete,” the media release stated.
