Councilwoman Chin Highlights Decades of Experience Fighting for Immigrants, Working Families and Seniors at Candidate Forum

LOWER EAST SIDE—At a candidate forum held at Manny Cantor Center last night, Councilwoman Margaret Chin made a direct appeal to voters for another term in the City Council so that she can continue her efforts to protect immigrants, provide more opportunities for young people, and take care of community’s growing number of seniors.

Councilwoman Chin said: “I am incredibly blessed to be able to represent the community I love. And together, we have been able to achieve some very important victories. With the help of community advocates, we have been able to fully fund afterschool programs for our young people – not just during the school year, but in the summer as well. And this year, I fought successfully to fully fund the Summer Youth Employment Program to ensure that every young person who wants a job — gets a job.

As Chair of the Council’s Committee on Aging, I secured the largest increase in permanent funding in over a decade for home-care services, senior centers, social adult day-care programs, and more. And when it comes to fighting for working families and seniors, I’m just getting started.”

Councilwoman Chin’s record was the main focus of the candidate forum held at Manny Cantor Center, which was sponsored by respected community organizations such as Henry Street Settlement, University Settlement, and Hamilton-Madison House.

Chin said: “I have a record of achieving results. Public Advocate Tish James, Borough President Brewer and Congresswoman Nydia Velasquez endorsed my re-election campaign based on that successful record. My opponents, with the exception of Dashia Imperiale who is a former tenant leader, have no record of working for our community.

This is the choice that voters have in this election. I have a record of achieving results for tenants, small business owners, and parents of school-age children. My opponents only have talk, and empty promises. I’ve fought for our community my entire life and will continue to do that in the years to come.”

With days left to go until the Democratic Primary on Sept. 12, Councilwoman Chin has secured the endorsement of almost every major labor organization, including the Central Labor Council, DC 37, 1199SEIU, Hotel Trades Council (HTC), SEIU 32BJ and UFT.

Congressman Jerry Nadler, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, Council Members Corey Johnson and Rosie Mendez, and State Senator Brad Hoylman have all endorsed Councilwoman Chin’s re-election.
