California Governor Gavin Newsom survived his recall election by a wide margin. About 60% of voters who cast a ballot voted to keep him in office. But a big part of this story is what happened on the bottom half of the ballot.

The only real contender to replace Newsom was Larry Elder, a well known radio and television host who also has a show on this network. Elder came as an outsider and picked up some unlikely support, including from a top Democrat, Gloria Romero, who actually campaigned for Elder.

We’re joined by Romero, who is a former California Senate majority leader. She told the LA Times that had there been a viable Democrat on the ballot she would have supported them, but the party didn’t choose to do that. We ask her if her support for Larry Elder was a marriage of convenience, or if it represents a more profound and enduring realignment, not only for herself, but for like minded voters too.
