A 10-year-old boy had a hero moment after his sister was taken out of school by a stranger.
The stranger walked into the Public School 189 Bilingual Center in Brooklyn, New York, around 2:20 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 7, Pix 11 learned. The man took a 6-year-old girl by the hand and walked out of the school with her.
The 10-year-old brother of the girl saw what was happening and thought something was wrong. He followed the man.
The man walked about 350 yards with the girl. When they reached the 318 Rochester Ave., he released her hand. The brother grabbed the girl’s hand and got her away. They then hid in a relative’s home nearby.
Police first thought the man was a kidnapper, but later learned he was in his 90s and was supposed to pick up a relative from the school. By mistake, he picked up the wrong child.
Neither of the children was injured.
Even though it wasn’t a kidnapping, and even though it may have been a good idea to alert some adults first, the boy was still praised for his bravery.
A similar incident happened last year in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Except that time, somebody ended up arrested.
It was on May 18 that a 27-year-old man grabbed a 4-year-old girl from a group of children playing in a garage. Holding her by the wrist, he started to walk away from the house. A 12-year-old girl bolted after him, while another girl went to alert the 4-year-old’s parents. The 12-year-old managed to pull the little girl out of the man’s grip and took her back to her home. The man was arrested and accused of kidnapping. His lawyer said the man had a history of mental illness, Kenosha News reported.
