Actress and former Gossip Girl star Blake Lively revealed her new baby bump for the first time in New York City on May 2, at the premiere of Pokémon Detective Pikachu. Ryan Reynolds, the voice of Detective Pikachu in the new film, accompanied Lively, who wore a stunning canary-yellow gown—fittingly so, since Pikachu is also yellow.
The sequinned form-fitting slip dress Lively wore is from Retrofête, priced at $670.
Lively, 31, has not been posting to her Instagram feed since Jan. 11. Fans can now suspect it was because she was busy being pregnant with her third child. She and Reynolds, 42, have not said when the baby is due. The expectant couple, who married in September 2012, currently have two daughters—4-year-old James and 2-year-old Inez.
Lively previously said that she chooses her own outfits because of her “control issues and a big ego.” In an interview with Women’s Wear Daily in 2018, Lively spoke of her love for design and fashion.
“It’s a way to be creative,” Lively said. “In my job I get to be creative, but it’s over a period of time and so many other people are involved, whereas this is a beginning, middle, and end, and I get to be creative and there’s an end date in the near future.”
The Family Stays Together
Both Lively and Reynolds have previously shared how they try to make their relationship work despite their busy schedules.
“We’ve never gone a week without seeing each other. There’s no major decision that I make without him. The best part is when we turn off our phones and just talk and hang out,” she told Marie Claire in August 2014. “He’s my best, best friend.”
Reynolds told People that the two try to arrange their work schedules to meet their family needs.
“Blake and I don’t do movies at the same time,” Reynolds said. “If she is doing a movie in Thailand and I am doing a movie in Vancouver we would just never see each other. We operate as a unit, and that works really well for us … The kids stay with us, and the family stays together, and that is where home is. So if we are in Spain or Utah or New York, as long as we are together, we’re home.”
Reynolds told Ellen DeGeneres in December how he thinks being a parent has changed him.
“I love it,” he said. “It’s really kind of made me a better person, I think. You know?”
He previously shared with E! News of the experiences he has been through as a parent.
“There have been times where I woke up, literally had no idea I had been walking for five minutes,” he said. “But you love it. You wake up in the middle of the night, you got a big stupid smile on your face. I was telling someone else that. Anything else that woke you up every 45 minutes, you’d kill it. But when it’s a baby, it’s the best thing that ever happened to you.”
Hopes of a Big Family and Privacy
He also previously shared that he’d hope to have a large family with Lively.
“We’d love to have a big family,” he told Details in August 2013. “We both come from big families—my parents did four, Blake’s did five. A lot of people say it’s crazy, but we’ll only know when we’re there, you know? We’ll walk through that fire pretty happily, I think.”
Lively had also expressed the same sentiments. In 2012, she told Allure: “Oh, I’d love 30 [children] if I could.” Then later, in 2016, Lively told People in jest: “I’m one of five kids. My husband is one of four, so we’re officially breeders. You can go on our website and we will give you some of our children.”
In the same year, Lively shared that she values her family’s privacy, telling Marie Claire that privacy is “the thing that I feel most protective of and the thing that I feel is the most exposed when I feel exploited.”
“I’d rather not have to deal with [paparazzi attention] at all, but we knew the lifestyle we were getting into, and while it’s hard … it’s another thing when it’s our child [James]. She didn’t have the opportunity to make a decision about what she wants.”
“Ryan had a nice, normal upbringing, and we want our kids to have the same normal life that we had,” Lively said. “We don’t ever want to rob them of what we had, because we’d feel really selfish.”
The family made their first public appearance with their two daughters in December 2016, when Reynolds accepted his star at the Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony. At the time, Reynolds expressed his appreciation of Lively and his two daughters.
