Two brothers ages six and seven were killed on Friday, May 29, after driving and crashing their grandmother’s car, according to the Missouri Highway Patrol crash report.

As indicated by the report, the incident happened at 4:20 p.m. in Jackson County, Missouri. The two juveniles from Independence, Missouri, took the car, a 2007 Buick Lacrosse—with the seven-year-old driving the car and the six-year-old in the passenger’s seat—and were traveling eastbound on East Blue Mills Road.

KCTV reported that the boys also drove the car through a field on a county road in an unincorporated area that is located in the area east of Kansas City.

The vehicle then veered off the road and struck the ground, where then the vehicle became airborne, according to the report.

“Vehicle struck a guardrail then struck the ground again, becoming airborne again,” the report reads. “Vehicle struck a guywire, began overturning, struck a tree, and came to a rest off the road on its top where it then caught fire.”

Both juveniles were pronounced dead at the scene by the Jackson County Medical Examiner Akanksha Narasimhan, according to the report. Both were transported back to the Jackson County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Neither of the boys were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. The car in question was totaled and had to be towed away.

“MSHP investigating double fatality accident at Blue Mills and Miller (unincorporated area of Jackson County) involving two children. MSHP will provide updates,” Jackson County Sheriff Darryl Forte wrote in a tweet on Friday.

Neither of the juveniles’ identities have been released. However, their next-of-kin has been notified of their death, according to the report.

The report indicated that this incident is being investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol with help from the MSGT. R. S. Smith, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Fort Osage Fire Department, and Liberty Fire Department.

According to the online traffic reports, a total of 30 deaths have been recorded in the region.

As of May 2020, including this incident, Troop A, which covers the region, had responded to 13 fatal crash sites, according to the Online Traffic Crash Report list, five fatal car crashes in April 2020, six crashes in March 2020, four in February 2020, and two from January 2020.

One of the crashes in February was classified as a “non-traffic fatality,” and the other one was classified as “other.”
